Body for Mind

Written by Helen, Jami Service User

What the body does can refresh what the mind does. Walking is recommended to counter depression, being associated with serotonin in the brain. I find myself smiling a good deal when out walking.  Walking is not necessarily inferior to running: The man who holds the record for walking across America completed it in less time than the man who holds the record for running across America.

Dancing has been recommended as good for the brain and of course dancing can be done in many ways, including the spontaneous.

I believe, it would be counterproductive to overdo physical activity, such fatigue being depressing instead. For me, I do know my limitations. Elsewhere, I have read that most people who join a gym end by relinquishing it. Perhaps it is best to aim at a little flexible walking or the like each day, whatever circumstances permit.

Physical activity for the benefit of others may be the most fulfilling from the sedentary to the outdoor. On the sedentary level, I spend time making presents for my friends and family. On the outdoor level, there are all manner of sponsored activities, like the Maccabi GB Community Fun Run, to raise money for good causes.

Walking, running or any other exercise to help someone in need may bring more health to oneself and more wealth to others.
