Mental Health and Wellbeing in the Jewish Community

Jami is the mental health service for our community.

Statistics show that one in four British adults will experience a diagnosable mental health problem each year. Mental health affects everyone.

Jami’s focus is on recovery; moving from lack of control and autonomy to becoming an active member of the Jami, Jewish and wider community, taking responsibility and having control over one’s life. Jami’s challenge is to assist people on this journey, from enabling them to become an expert in their own self-care to being supported, where appropriate, back into employment.

Jami provides practical and emotional support for the mental health needs of the Jewish community – delivering services that enable independence and build resilience through:

  • Community Hubs and Outreach
  • Education and Training
  • Bespoke recovery support plans

Tracy, Fitness Coordinator for Jami, provides a variety of group exercise sessions, ranging from walking groups to energising exercise sessions, yoga and pilates, dance based activities and relaxation and breathing techniques for anxiety for both service users and Jami staff teams.  Individual sessions for clients are also available.

Tracy says “Jami recognises the relationship between mind and body, and the importance of looking after your physical self, to maximise self-esteem and confidence and make progress along the recovery path.  We encourage our clients to use the many free schemes in local parks, including football, tennis and table tennis and outdoor gyms.  We also have an allotment at Mitkadem, our Redbridge Centre, where we grow a selection of fruits and vegetables, encouraging healthy eating.”

At Jami, we are committed to helping individuals achieve their full potential.  Jami hubs have multidisciplinary staff teams and focus on both mental and physical health.

“Joining in community-based fitness and exercise groups breaks down barriers, is fun and a great way to socialise and make new friends, all whilst improving your mental health.  Here at Jami we support and help clients to reach their fitness goals, learn new skills and take on new challenges.”

Tracy, along with service users, staff and members of the community choosing to run and raise funds for Jami, will be joining ‘Team Jami’ at the Maccabi GB Community Fun Run on Sunday 5th July 2020 at Allianz Park.
